This year, for World Suicide Prevention Day, the theme is “Creating Hope through Action.” For too long we’ve been stuck in “awareness raising” — a necessary but not sufficient condition for change. It’s time to take action. Here are 10 tips for an impactful National Suicide Prevention Week (September 5-11)/World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10th) - action steps you can take with you to impact your community all year long

Why is Suicide Prevention a Health and Safety Priority in Construction?

Many construction workers die by suicide. In fact, a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)1 found men in construction die by suicide at a rate 3.5x higher than the general population of adults. When workers feel psychologically healthy and safe, they are more likely to be fully present - knowing their employer has their back. Not surprisingly, organizations that create a caring culture experience.

Advanced Skills Training for Managers.

Construction Specific Suicide Prevention

As construction companies, unions, and professional associations evolve their suicide prevention strategies, many realize they need to build out a stratified training program. Getting beyond basic awareness educational sessions, managers need advanced skills in how to best help workers who are in high levels of distress. Upwards of 1,000 construction workers have taken the training to date in the pilot effort and 92% of them stated they found the training useful or very useful.

Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Resources

According to the Centers for Disease Prevention, construction occupations have the highest rate of suicide, as well as the highest number of suicides across all occupational groups. To combat these statistics, contractors, unions, associations, industry service providers and project owners must work together to STAND up for suicide prevention.
